Smart Axles Revolutionize Trailer Maintenance

Thanks to an innovative NFC-based solution, managing and identifying trailer axles has now become much easier, more reliable and more cost-effective.

Boosting Reliability in Transport

In the fast-paced and ultra-competitive transport and logistics industry, efficiency and reliability are paramount. Trailer axles, i.e. axles on trailers or semi-trailers, are equally important but often overlooked. They are crucial for safety, stability, and payload distribution. Traditionally, identifying and managing these axles has been a time-consuming and error-prone process. Thanks to an innovative NFC (Near Field Communication) solution and the expertise of Tageos, its customers and market partners, this critical and important task is now smarter, faster, and more reliable than ever.

The Challenge: Manual Product Identification has its Limits

Until now, technicians had to scan QR codes located in hard-to-reach places, such as under vehicles or in inspection pits to identify trailer axles requiring maintenance or replacement. This process was labor-intensive and prone to error, especially when labels were dirty or damaged. The result? Delays, wasted resources, and a high risk of ordering incorrect parts.

SAF-HOLLAND SE, a leading manufacturer of trailer axles, recognized the need for a better approach. In close collaboration with partners from the RFID ecosystem, they have now revolutionized axle identification. At the heart of this transformation is a comprehensive solution equipped with high-performance NFC inlays from Tageos.

NFC: A Game-Changer for Asset Identification

One center part of this solution, the EOS-920 NTAG213 NFC inlay from Tageos, is a compact, high-performance product with a diameter of just 20 mm. Despite its small size, the EOS-920 NTAG213 offers exceptional performance, enabling tagged products to provide digital content accessible via smartphones throughout the entire value chain, from manufacturing to recycling.

The NFC inlay uses the NXP® NTAG 213 IC, which comes with 144 bytes of user memory, superior performance and advanced functionalities including a UID mirror. The inlay is embedded in a specially designed label which is affixed to the inside of the SAF axles hub cap. The label is created and printed by identytag GmbH, while Winckel GmbH oversees project development, provides support for the SH-Connect app and ensures the durability and compatibility of the material with the axle components.

How the Solution Works

The new identification system requires three elements: an SAF axle with an NFC-enabled hub cap; the SH-Connect app; and a smartphone or other NFC-enabled device with internet access. Users can instantly access product data, including technical documents and spare parts information, with a simple tap on the NFC label, eliminating the need for manual searches or printed catalogues or datasheets.

The SH-Connect app is central to the solution, too, offering a suite of features designed to simplify axle management, and to optimize maintenance and spare parts ordering:

  • NFC Scan: Instantly identify products and access relevant data without searching through technical literature.
  • I.Q. Portal: Find documents, order spare parts, or submit complaints via an intelligent online platform.
  • Workshop Locator: Locate nearby workshops or parts dealers and contact them directly.
  • Digital Spare Parts Catalogue: Identify and order the correct spare parts with ease.
  • Workshop Manual & Literature: Access technical data, instructions, and certificates.
  • Training & Support: Register for training courses and contact support personnel directly.

Bridging the Gap Between the Physical and Digital Worlds

The success of this project is a testament to the power of good collaboration. According to Felix Passia, Head of Sales identytag, “This partnership once again embodies the power of the RFID ecosystem, driving the technology forward smart and rapidly across the transport and logistics industries. By combining Winckel’s integration expertise with identytag’s labels, based on Tageos’ advanced RFID and NFC inlays and tags, we’re creating systems that don’t just track corporate assets: they generate valuable product information and intelligence. Together, we are bridging the gap between the physical and digital worlds, ensuring the smart axle has its place in the smart transport concept of the future.”

Reliability, Efficiency and Sustainability

By integrating this NFC-based solution, SAF-HOLLAND SE, supported by its partners identytag, Winckel and Tageos, has achieved several key benefits:

  • Error prevention: NFC ensures unambiguous identification, preventing mix-ups and costly returns.
  • Up-to-date information: The SH-Connect app automatically provides the latest data, eliminating the need for manual updates.
  • Improved efficiency: Faster access to accurate information reduces downtime and gets trailers back on the road quickly.
  • No hardware costs: Workshops and shipping companies do not need to invest in additional hardware or software.
  • Retrofittable solution: Existing SAF axles can be upgraded with NFC inlays, using a simple registration process via the app.
  • Environmental advantages: Reduced paper usage and administrative effort contribute to more sustainable operations.

This smart, NFC-based axle identification solution is setting new standards for reliability, efficiency and sustainability in transport and logistics. As the industry continues to embrace digital transformation, Tageos and its customers and market partners are paving the way for smarter, safer, and more connected supply chains.
